The Verkhovna Rada has approved amendments to the State Budget that will provide additional funding to ensure the safe operation of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone. This was announced by First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine and Minister of Energy of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal.

According to him, nearly UAH 600 million has been additionally allocated for these purposes. Of this amount, more than UAH 525 million will be directed towards maintaining the plant’s facilities and the Shelter Object in a safe condition, as well as ensuring the operation of personnel at the Chornobyl NPP. A further UAH 72 million will be allocated to maintaining the environmentally safe condition of the Exclusion Zone, monitoring activities, and fire prevention measures.

In addition, more than UAH 127 million has been earmarked for the coal sector and the fulfilment of social obligations to employees. The budget amendments also provide additional funding for cybersecurity and the IT infrastructure of the Ministry of Energy.

“I am grateful to the Members of Parliament for supporting this decision. Today, the energy sector is a critically important pillar of our country’s stability and resilience,” Denys Shmyhal wrote.
