The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), established in London in June 2003, is a multi-stakeholder organization that unites governments, companies, and civil society organizations actively implementing and supporting the Initiative to achieve high standards of transparency in the extractive sector.
Mission: To promote understanding of natural resource governance, strengthen public and corporate governance and accountability, and provide access to data for policy-making and dialogue among multiple stakeholders in the extractive sector.
The governing body of the EITI is the Board, which sets strategic priorities and is responsible for assessing countries’ progress in meeting the EITI Standard for transparency in extractive industries.
The EITI Board includes representatives from implementing and supporting countries, civil society organizations, and companies.
Since 2016, representatives from Ukraine have been elected to the EITI Board.
From 2016 to 2023, Oleksiy Orlovskyi, Director of the “Democracy and Good Governance” Program at the International Renaissance Foundation, was twice elected to the EITI International Board. As a Board member, he chaired the Governance and Oversight Committee, which oversees the management system of the global Initiative (including the operation of the EITI International Secretariat, activities of national Multi-Stakeholder Groups, conflict of interest policies, complaint mechanisms, and the development of rules and procedures for stakeholder groups).
From 2020 to 2023, Viktoriia Hnatovska, head of the expert group of the Directorate for Energy and Resource Efficiency Policy at the Ministry of Energy, served on the EITI Board and was a member of the Governance and Oversight Committee, which during this period actively worked on preparing the updated EITI Standard 2023.
Since June 2023, Ukraine’s representative on the EITI Board is Olena Pavlenko, president of the NGO “Dixi Group” and member of the EITI Multi-Stakeholder Group.
The EITI International Secretariat, headquartered in Oslo, Norway, is a small team of staff from around the world. The Secretariat manages the operations of the EITI Association and supports nearly 60 countries in implementing the EITI Standard. Its staff represent 25 countries.
EITI remains a key forum for cooperation and experience exchange in implementing transparency standards in natural resource extraction. By promoting principles of transparency and openness, the Initiative fosters sustainable development and mutual understanding among stakeholders.
