First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine – Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal met with Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Denys Shmyhal thanked the IAEA for its consistent support for nuclear safety in Ukraine since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale war and for the continued presence of Agency missions at Ukrainian nuclear power plants and critical substations.

Particular attention during the meeting was devoted to the restoration of the New Safe Confinement at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which was damaged in a Russian attack. Denys Shmyhal commended the IAEA’s efforts to mobilise international support for the restoration of the facility.

The parties also discussed the Agency’s assistance to Ukraine’s energy sector. With the IAEA’s support, more than 200 deliveries of essential equipment, worth over EUR 22 million in total, have already been organised.

In addition, the participants reviewed the situation at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Key issues included ensuring a reliable and uninterrupted off-site power supply to the plant and maintaining the safe and continuous operation of the Agency’s experts at the facility.

“I thank Rafael Grossi and the IAEA team for their tangible assistance to Ukraine under the most challenging circumstances,” Denys Shmyhal noted.
