First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine – Minister of Energy of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal, during his working visit to Sumy region, held a meeting with the leadership of the Regional Military Administration and heads of energy companies to discuss preparations for the 2026/27 autumn-winter period.

The Minister of Energy received an update on the readiness of the region’s electricity infrastructure for operation during the autumn-winter period, including the commissioning of an additional backup power transmission line.

The participants discussed the operation of the power grid amid ongoing Russian attacks and possible backup power supply schemes for consumers. Particular attention was paid to strengthening the protection of transformers and implementing new technical solutions to protect energy infrastructure from FPV drones.

“An important area is the development of distributed generation. The Sumy Region Resilience Plan provides for the installation of an additional 36.4 MW of capacity. To date, only 2.4 MW has been commissioned. Construction work is underway at all planned sites. I have instructed that these works be accelerated,” Denys Shmyhal said.

The installation of solar power plants is also ongoing in the region. The 2026 plan provides for 62 solar power plants with a total capacity of 4.5 MW. As of today, 30 solar power plants with a total capacity of 2.5 MW have already been installed. The work is ongoing.

Through the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, procurement of equipment worth €54.9 million has been approved based on requests from energy sector companies in Sumy region. Contracts worth €22.7 million have already been signed, while tender procedures are ongoing for procurements worth more than €9 million.
