First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine – Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal held a meeting with U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright in New York.

They discussed energy security issues, including the importance of energy for all areas of life. Denys Shmyhal stressed the importance of using diplomatic instruments to achieve an energy ceasefire.

The First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine – Minister of Energy said that he and Chris Wright had also discussed cooperation in the nuclear sector.

“We plan to jointly implement a large-scale project to construct Unit 5 at the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant using Westinghouse technologies. We see significant prospects for developing cooperation in the production of nuclear fuel components and fuel assemblies, as well as in the field of small modular reactors (SMRs),” Denys Shmyhal noted.

The Minister of Energy of Ukraine thanked Chris Wright for the U.S. decision to allocate $174 million for the restoration of Ukraine’s energy sector and $100 million for the restoration of the New Safe Confinement at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which was damaged as a result of a Russian attack.

“Ukraine highly values cooperation with our American partners in the energy sector. Strengthening the energy security of Ukraine and Europe is our shared priority,” Denys Shmyhal concluded.
