First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine - Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal held an online meeting with Tim Hodgson, Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. The key topics of discussion were cooperation in the gas sector and nuclear energy.

“We are seeking to diversify gas supply routes as much as possible. Ukraine proposes establishing a strategic energy security bridge with Canada focused on supplying Canadian LNG to Ukraine. Following the agreements reached by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Prime Minister Mark Carney, we discussed with the Minister the preparation and benefits of concluding a long-term 30-year strategic energy agreement,” Denys Shmyhal said.

The parties also discussed Ukraine’s preparations for the upcoming winter season, including the possibility of Canada providing CAD 650 million in direct grant support for gas procurement as part of Canada’s overall assistance package for Ukraine this year. Denys Shmyhal also noted that Ukraine is inviting Canadian suppliers to make use of the country’s underground gas storage facilities.

The ministers discussed the supply of energy equipment from Canadian manufacturers to Ukraine and exchanged views on nuclear energy cooperation. Ukraine is interested in Canada’s expertise and capabilities in the development of small modular reactors (SMRs), and both sides agreed that this area would form part of the future strategic energy agreement.

Denys Shmyhal thanked his Canadian counterpart for Canada’s unwavering support for Ukraine and for Minister Hodgson’s personal contribution to strengthening the energy partnership between the two countries.

“We highly appreciate the assistance provided through the Ukraine Energy Support Fund. Canada’s total contributions have already reached CAD 90 million,” Denys Shmyhal noted.
