These are the specialists that Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute will train at the Energy Resilience Lab — Ukraine’s first training centre dedicated to cogeneration, decentralised and autonomous energy systems.

The laboratory was established and equipped with the support of RSE, an international engineering and manufacturing company that develops and implements integrated energy solutions for industry and critical infrastructure.

The modern two-storey training facility, covering 257 square metres, is designed to accommodate up to 20 energy students at a time. Here, they will work with equipment and technologies already used at real energy facilities by RSE and MWM (Caterpillar Energy Solutions), including:

  • an MWM TCG 2016 generating unit with a capacity of 600 kW;
  • automation simulators;
  • software systems for modelling engine operation and synchronising a cogeneration unit with the power grid.

“Energy system resilience starts with people who have up-to-date knowledge and practical skills. Ukraine’s energy sector is undergoing a large-scale transformation, and alongside new technologies, we need specialists who understand the principles of decentralised generation and can implement modern solutions in practice. The establishment of such training centres is an important step towards developing a new generation of engineers for Ukraine’s energy sector,” Deputy Minister of Energy Valentyna Moskalenko notes.

Alongside the opening of the laboratory, Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute has introduced a new academic course, “Cogeneration Units for Sustainable Energy Supply”, tailored to the current needs of Ukraine’s energy sector. The course was developed with the support of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), a project partner.

It will be taught by 10 Kyiv Polytechnic Institute lecturers who completed specialised technical training at the MWM Training Centre in Mannheim in autumn 2025.

From training engineers and researching new technologies to their practical application in local communities and at critical infrastructure facilities.

The Energy Resilience Lab at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute is another step towards developing the engineering expertise in Ukraine on which the resilience of the energy system depends.
