Upon the proposal of the Ministry of Energy, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine introduced amendments to the list of critical infrastructure sectors, allowing electricity storage facilities (battery energy storage systems) to be classified as critical infrastructure. The adopted decision will contribute to enhanced protection of such facilities and strengthen the overall resilience of the energy system.

Energy storage systems are currently developing rapidly, particularly in the context of ongoing Russian attacks against the energy sector. Ukraine has already installed electricity storage systems with a total capacity exceeding 500 MW, while technical specifications have been issued for the installation of more than an additional 1,000 MW.

“Large-scale battery storage facilities help the power system operate more steadily, respond more quickly to fluctuations in demand, and reduce the risk of emergency outages. Therefore, our goal is to ensure the maximum possible protection of such facilities,” emphasized First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal.

The Government resolution will enable active protection of the relevant facilities within the framework of the national critical infrastructure protection system.
