Gas Transmission System Operators of Ukraine and Poland Agree to Increase Gas Import Capacity

27 January 2026, 15:45

The Polish gas transmission system operator Gaz-System and the Gas Transmission Operator of Ukraine have agreed on a phased increase in capacity for gas imports from Poland to Ukraine starting February 2026. By the end of April, the capacity in this direction will grow from 15.3 million cubic meters to 18.4 million cubic meters per day. This was announced by First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine – Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal.

According to him, this agreement is important for ensuring stable heat supply to Ukrainian homes, hospitals, schools, and critical infrastructure.

“Increasing import capacities is part of a systematic effort to strengthen Ukraine’s energy security and diversify gas supply routes. The Polish route provides access to multiple sources of gas and remains one of the key import directions. In 2025, 2.1 billion cubic meters of gas were supplied via Poland — over 30% of total imports, including approximately 600 million cubic meters of U.S. LNG,” emphasized First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine – Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal.

He expressed gratitude to the Polish partners for their consistent support of Ukraine and their joint work to strengthen Ukraine’s energy resilience.

It should be noted that in January 2026, imports from Poland averaged 11.6 million cubic meters per day — more than half of all gas imported by Ukraine. Together with Hungary, Poland provides the majority of supplies, as tariffs on these routes are lower than via Slovakia or the Southern Corridor (Trans-Balkan route).
