On the sidelines of the international conference “Energy Security – Lessons Learned from Ukraine” in Berlin, First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal held a meeting with Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany Johann Wadephul.
The parties discussed expanding cooperation with German industry in the areas of flexible generation, power grid modernisation, hydrogen technologies, and localisation of energy equipment production.
They also coordinated priorities for preparations for the upcoming heating season.
“In 2026, an additional EUR 46 million is envisaged for electricity transmission efficiency projects, which we will implement jointly with KfW,” Denys Shmyhal announced following the meeting.
The parties also addressed the joint project with Siemens Energy and Siemens AG concerning the relocation of a gas turbine to one of Ukraine’s combined heat and power plants. As Denys Shmyhal noted, infrastructure associated with Nord Stream should serve to strengthen the energy security of both Ukraine and Europe.
They further discussed gas security issues and the utilisation of Ukrainian underground gas storage facilities. Denys Shmyhal expressed gratitude for the implementation of the first-ever supply of regasified LNG from Germany to Ukraine in February this year.
Regarding nuclear safety, the parties agreed that Europe should accelerate diversification efforts and transition towards alternative suppliers and technologies for nuclear fuel production.
Denys Shmyhal thanked Germany for its leadership in supporting Ukraine. Through the Emergency Energy Support Hub, Ukraine has received more than 3.2 thousand tonnes of humanitarian cargo from 49 German donors.
