Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine Hanna Lihun participated in the Hydrogen Futures Symposium in Lviv, which brought together representatives of government, business, academia, civil society and international partners. The event was the first major hydrogen-focused gathering in Ukraine since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Participants discussed prospects for developing Ukraine’s hydrogen sector, opportunities to export hydrogen and its derivatives to EU countries, industrial decarbonisation, the development of relevant infrastructure and attracting investment.

“We view hydrogen not only as a promising energy carrier of the future, but also as one of the strategic elements of the green transition, economic decarbonisation, stronger energy security and Ukraine’s integration into the European energy space,” Hanna Lihun noted.

The Deputy Minister also said that the Ministry of Energy had developed a draft law to establish the legal framework for the development of Ukraine’s hydrogen market, future hydrogen infrastructure and its integration with European markets.

During thematic sessions, participants explored opportunities to create value chains based on green hydrogen, including the production of green steel, ammonia and synthetic fuels. They also discussed the environmental aspects of hydrogen projects, regional development and the need for skilled professionals in this emerging sector.

Ukrainian companies and start-ups also presented their hydrogen projects and initiatives. The event provided a platform for sharing expertise, building professional networks and identifying opportunities for further cooperation.
