First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine – Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal chaired a meeting with the leadership of NPC Ukrenergo, JSC NNEGC Energoatom, PJSC Ukrhydroenergo, Naftogaz Group, and the National Energy and Utilities Regulatory Commission (NEURC) to discuss preparations for the expected period of peak electricity demand caused by exceptionally hot weather.

“Weather forecasters predict an abnormal heatwave as early as next week, which, according to our estimates, could increase electricity consumption by 1 GW,” Denys Shmyhal said.

Participants discussed the measures required to maintain the balance of the power system during peak demand, which coincides with scheduled maintenance at electricity generation facilities.

Denys Shmyhal noted that the Ministry of Energy is already implementing a comprehensive set of measures to prepare the power system for the peak load period. In particular, maintenance schedules at generation facilities, including nuclear power plant units, have been adjusted.

The Ministry is also considering measures to increase electricity imports and introduce additional incentives for businesses to purchase imported electricity for their own consumption.

In addition, every effort is being made to maximize the use of available domestic generation capacity, particularly additional gas-fired and thermal generation.

“We expect these and other measures to fully meet consumers’ electricity needs. At the same time, Ukrenergo is preparing for the possible introduction of power limitation schedules for industry and businesses if necessary,” Denys Shmyhal stressed.

The Minister added that the stability of Ukraine’s power system depends not only on the work of energy professionals but also on responsible electricity consumption. Using electricity wisely and reducing consumption during peak hours from 16:00 to 23:00 will help reduce pressure on the power system and ensure its stable operation.
