Ministry of Energy Welcomes EU Decision to Phase Out Russian Gas

18 December 2025, 15:40

The Ministry of Energy welcomes the European Parliament's decision to phase out imports of Russian gas and oil.

This is a historic step, endorsed by representatives of all people of the European Union, will strengthen Europe’s energy security and demonstrates a shared commitment to countering Russia’s long-term weaponisation of energy.

Under the new law, imports of Russian liquefied natural gas will be banned once the regulation enters into force in early 2026. Imports of Russian pipeline gas will be phased out by 30 September 2027. The introduction of origin-verification requirements and penalties for violations is an important measure for strengthening control and preventing circumvention.

The text also obliges EU member-states to establish a diversification plan describing measures, milestones and potential barriers to diversifying their oil supplies, in order to discontinue, by the end of 2027, imports of oil, which originates in or is exported, directly or indirectly, from the Russian Federation

“The Ministry of Energy welcomes this responsible and strategic decision and is grateful to the European Commission for the initiative and to all MEPs who supported this decision. Ending the import of Russian fossils will remove one of the main instruments the Kremlin has used for years to pressure Europe. This step reinforces the security of all EU member states, limits Russia’s ability to manipulate energy markets and supports Ukraine in resisting Russian aggression,” said Acting Minister of Energy Artem Nekrasov.
