Ukraine continues to strengthen the energy autonomy of healthcare facilities. In particular, the Regional Clinical Medical Centre for Socially Dangerous Diseases of the Poltava Regional Council has launched its own electricity generation.

The Centre provides specialised medical care to patients with tuberculosis, HIV infection, viral hepatitis and other infectious diseases. It conducts laboratory diagnostics and X-ray examinations, provides medical consultations and ensures multidisciplinary patient support. Approximately 250 people visit the facility every day.

As part of the “Ray of Hope” joint project of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine and the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, aimed at enhancing the energy autonomy of healthcare facilities, a solar power plant with a total capacity of 68.8 kW has been installed at the Centre.

The solar power plant is already generating electricity and helping to maintain the operation of medical and auxiliary equipment, including during disruptions in the external power supply. The system consists of 110 solar panels, two inverters, 15 energy storage units and a battery management system.

The electricity generated is used to power the department responsible for monitoring and evaluating tuberculosis prevention measures, the X-ray department, the boiler house, the laundry, the regional pharmaceutical warehouse, the medical archive and other units.

Own electricity generation also enables the facility to reduce its reliance on the external power grid and maintain the operation of essential services during power outages.

In addition to the solar power plant, the Centre operates an autonomous boiler house, which ensures a stable heat supply throughout the heating season, including in the event of disruptions to the centralised heating network.

Strengthening the energy autonomy of healthcare facilities is part of a systematic effort underway across various regions of Ukraine. Such solutions help prepare healthcare facilities for the autumn-winter period and ensure the uninterrupted provision of medical care even amid unstable power supply.

The “Ray of Hope” programme is a joint initiative of the European Commission, the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine and the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, implemented within the framework of the Ukraine Energy Support Fund and coordinated by the Energy Community Secretariat.

The programme aims to enhance the energy resilience of healthcare facilities by providing them with solar panels, energy storage systems and other equipment necessary to ensure reliable power supply and uninterrupted operation even under challenging conditions. Since the beginning of the year, 41 healthcare facilities have launched their own electricity generation under the “Ray of Hope” programme.
