Cooperation between Ukraine and Austria in the recovery of Ukraine’s energy sector and the strengthening of regional energy security remains a shared priority for both countries.
This was emphasized by the First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine - Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal following a meeting with Beate Meinl-Reisinger, Federal Minister for European and International Affairs of Austria. The parties signed a Memorandum of Cooperation.
Denys Shmyhal highlighted the significant potential for cooperation with Austria in both short- and long-term projects.
“Expanding cooperation will enhance the energy security of our partners through diversification of supply routes. At the same time, attracting Austrian investment into the development of Ukraine’s hydropower and wind energy will strengthen the country’s energy resilience. To advance these initiatives, we agreed to hold a large conference in Vienna dedicated to the recovery and reconstruction of Ukraine’s energy sector,” he noted.
The Minister of Energy stressed that Ukraine’s objective is to engage partners in projects aimed at reconstruction, modernization, and investment in the energy sector.
The ministers also discussed the specific needs of Ukraine’s energy sector in the context of preparations for the next winter. “The key priorities are emergency recovery and the supply of critically important equipment. Among the most urgent needs are transformers,” Denys Shmyhal underlined.
The First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine - Minister of Energy expressed gratitude to Austria for the assistance already provided. Ukraine has received more than 159 tonnes of equipment, as well as a €15.5 million contribution to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund. These funds have enabled the procurement of equipment for the Kharkiv, Sumy, and Kyiv regions.
“I invited Austrian partners to actively engage in the ‘Energy Ramstein’ cooperation format. I am grateful to Minister Meinl-Reisinger for her consistent support for Ukraine and readiness to deepen our cooperation,” Denys Shmyhal concluded.
