During a visit to Warsaw, First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal held a meeting with Poland’s Minister of Energy, Miłosz Motyka.
The parties discussed preparations of the Ukrainian power system for the upcoming winter season, as well as practical measures through which Poland could further support Ukraine already now. These include the possible transfer of decommissioned equipment for thermal generation, emergency restoration works, as well as balancing and backup power systems. As Denys Shmyhal noted, concrete proposals are already on the table, and technical teams are beginning the relevant work.
A separate focus of the discussions was the deepening of partnership in the gas sector.
“We are interested in increasing LNG supplies through Polish entry points, as well as in using Ukrainian underground gas storage facilities as a regional gas hub. A number of Polish companies are already cooperating with us and have storage contracts in place. We share a common intention to expand this cooperation,” the Minister of Energy stated.
According to him, Ukraine is entering a new stage of increasing import capacity for gas supplies from Poland. The Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine has received approval from the National Energy and Utilities Regulatory Commission (NEURC) to implement a joint project aimed at expanding capacity at the interconnection point with Poland. This decision opens a new stage in expanding natural gas imports from the European Union and will further contribute to Ukraine’s integration into the European energy market.
In the electricity sector, cooperation between the two countries is focused on increasing cross-border transmission capacity, enhancing system flexibility, and integrating renewable generation.
Denys Shmyhal thanked Poland for its continued support and for preparations for the Ukraine Recovery Conference URC2026, which will take place in Gdańsk this year.
