Ukraine and the United States Discussed Strengthening Energy Security and the Protection of Energy Infrastructure

05 August 2025, 18:48

Deepening the strategic partnership between Ukraine and the United States, strengthening the physical protection of energy facilities — particularly substations — and the effective use of international aid for the restoration of damaged infrastructure were the key topics of the meeting between Ukraine’s Minister of Energy, Svitlana Grynchuk, and U.S. Chargé d’Affaires in Ukraine, Julie S. Davis.

Representatives of the Ministry also discussed preparations for the heating season, the implementation of long-term decarbonization projects in the energy sector and attracting investments through the U.S.–Ukraine Recovery Fund.

“The United States remains one of Ukraine’s key partners in strengthening the resilience of our energy system. Our joint efforts are aimed at protecting energy infrastructure, developing modern generation, and integrating into the European energy space,” noted Svitlana Grynchuk.

Special attention was paid to cooperation in the field of nuclear energy within the framework of the REPowerEU initiative, aimed at the European Union’s phase-out of russian nuclear fuel. The parties also discussed stabilizing the gas market — including increasing imports and using Ukraine’s underground storage facilities as a potential regional hub. Issues of nuclear safety at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant and in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone were also raised.

According to the Ministry of Energy, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Ukraine’s energy system has suffered more than 65,000 damages as a result of russian attacks. In 2024 alone, despite the so-called “energy truce,” more than 2,500 new incidents have been recorded.
