Joint project enhances Ukraine's energy security and supply relaibility
Westinghouse Electric Company and SE NNEGC Energoatom, Ukraine’s national nuclear energy generating company, announced the signing of key new agreements during the Ukraine Recovery Conference that will enable the deployment of full-scale production capacities in Ukraine for the manufacturing of nuclear fuel components compatible with Westinghouse technologies.
This cooperation marks a major step in enhancing the safety and reliability of fuel supply for Ukraine’s nuclear generation, using the only fully Western-designed fuel offering for VVER reactors.
“This agreement is yet another strategic step towards Ukraine’s energy independence. The development of domestic production of fuel assemblies based on Westinghouse technology not only increases the reliability of nuclear fuel supply but also permanently eliminates dependence on Russian fuel supply chains,” said German Galushchenko, Minister of Energy of Ukraine. “Through this partnership, we are reinforcing the energy security of both Ukraine and Europe, and building a future where Ukraine’s nuclear energy sector is firmly integrated into the Western market.”
Petro Kotin, Acting President of SE NNEGC Energoatom, and Aziz Dag, Managing Director and Senior Vice President of Westinghouse Electric Sweden AB, signed a major declaration in the presence of Minister German Galushchenko, confirming the agreement to establish a production line for the manufacturing of VVER-1000 fuel assemblies at an Energoatom subsidiary site. The final Supply Agreement for the delivery of the core production equipment is expected to be signed shortly.
Earlier this year, Westinghouse certified one of Energoatom’s enterprises as a qualified supplier for manufacturing components for Westinghouse VVER-1000 fuel assemblies, paving the way for the creation of these advanced production capacities in Ukraine.
“We are proud to expand our strong partnership and shared commitment to Ukraine’s energy security,” said Aziz Dag. “Westinghouse has a proven track record of designing nuclear fuel for VVER reactors used at Ukraine’s VVER-1000 and VVER-440 units, with more than 20 years of outstanding operational performance. Our top-tier fuel assemblies are helping Ukraine and other countries reduce dependence on Russian nuclear fuel supply chains and move toward a carbon-free future.”
Energoatom and Westinghouse have also agreed to build nine AP1000® reactors in Ukraine. The AP1000 is a proven Generation III+ reactor featuring unique fully passive safety systems, standardized modular construction, and industry-leading operational flexibility.
