First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine - Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal held a meeting with President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development Odile Renaud-Basso.

He expressed his gratitude for the Bank’s continued support to Ukraine, in particular for the EBRD’s assistance in organising the successful International Chornobyl Conference on Recovery and Nuclear Safety.

First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine - Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal marked the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster by recognising specialists who work daily to protect people from radiation risks.

“The accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant was a catastrophe that threatened an entire continent. Ukraine is systematically working to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again — and these specialists are at the core of this effort,” Denys Shmyhal stressed.

First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine - Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal held a meeting with Karl Nehammer, Vice-President of the European Investment Bank. The parties discussed the expansion of cooperation in the energy sector.

“Today, our cooperation with the EIB already covers eight projects with a total value of €1.3 billion. We are grateful for the consistent support that helps strengthen the resilience of Ukraine’s energy system,” Denys Shmyhal noted.

On the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster, First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine - Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal, together with international partners, held two key events: the so-called “Energy Ramstein” and the International Chornobyl Conference on Recovery and Nuclear Safety under the leadership of Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

As a result of these meetings, a number of important agreements were reached, including:

First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine - Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal, together with international partners, visited key facilities of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and reviewed the condition of the New Safe Confinement on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster.

The focus was on restoring its protective functions, which were damaged as a result of a Russian drone attack in February 2025.

- As a result of shelling of energy infrastructure facilities, a number of consumers in Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Kherson, Chernihiv and Kharkiv regions remain temporarily without electricity supply.

- Energy workers are operating in an enhanced mode to restore electricity supply to all consumers as quickly as possible. Restoration works are ongoing around the clock.

On April 26, 2026, events dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster took place on the plant’s grounds.

A ministerial meeting of the G7+ Coordination Group on Energy Support for Ukraine was held in Kyiv, bringing together European Commissioners, heads of international financial institutions, energy ministers, and other high-level representatives of partner countries.

First Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Energy of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal подчеркнул that preparing for the upcoming winter is a key challenge for Ukraine’s energy sector, noting that at least EUR 5.4 billion is required to meet this objective.

The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are expanding their partnership in the development of nuclear energy and the restoration of critical energy infrastructure. The corresponding Memorandum of Cooperation was signed by the First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine – Minister of Energy, Denys Shmyhal, and the Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi.

The document предусматривает cooperation across a number of key areas, in particular:

“Chornobyl has become both a symbol of the criminal irresponsibility of the Soviet totalitarian system and of the heroism of those who took part in mitigating the consequences of the disaster,” Denys Shmyhal emphasized.

According to him, Chornobyl remains one of the key lessons for humanity. Russia’s war against Ukraine has further exacerbated these challenges. The occupation of the exclusion zone, the seizure of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, and the strike on the New Safe Confinement pose risks not only to Ukraine but to the entire continent.
